Infectious bursal disease (IBD)

Infectious bursal disease is an immunosuppressive disease of birds caused by birna virus and characterized by lesions in bursa of fabricious, lack of B-lymphocytes, deposition of urates in kidneys and ureter and haemorrhagic myositis.

  • Morbidity rate is as high as 100% and mortality is upto 80%.
  • Transmitted through feed, water and droppings of the infected birds.
  • Most common route of infection is oral route.
  • Conjunctival and respiratory routes are also important. Virus infects macrophages and lymphoid cells.
  • Virus first reaches the liver then in the blood stream. Virus causes destruction B-cells and their precursors.
  • Bursal depletion causes immunosuppression.
  • Characteristic symptoms are vary due to immunosuppression, trembling of body, picking of vent, watery diarrhoea and prostration.
