Examination of peritoneal fluid in livestock

Peritoneum is the serous membrane that line abdominal cavities, and moreover cover the surfaces of organs in situ, as parietal and visceral parts respectively.
Normally, a small amount of free fluid is present in the cavities.
The abnormal accumulation of fluid is an indication of a pathologic process involved in it’s production and/or removal and is not a disease itself.
