Mastitis is inflammation of one or more quarters of the udder.
- The most costly disease affecting dairy and dairy cattle throughout the world.
- It causes significant economic losses to the Indian dairy industry.
- Effects on Animal health are Loss of functional quarter, Lowered milk production and Death of cow.
- Effects on Human health are Poor quality milk and antibiotic residues in milk.
- In Subclinical Mastitis; 90 -95% of all mastitis cases, udder appears normal, milk appears normal, elevated Somatic Cell Count, lowered milk output (~ 10%) and longer duration.
- In Clinical Mastitis, 5 – 10% of all mastitis cases, inflamed udder and clumps and clots in milk.
- There are two types of clinical mastitis 1) Acute type- major type of clinical mastitis, bad milk, loss of appetite, depression and prompt attention needed. 2) Chronic type- bad milk and cow appears healthy.
- Etiology of mastitis are Bacteria (~ 70%), Yeasts and molds (~ 2%), Unknown (~ 28%)- physical, Trauma and weather extremes.
