Hydropericardium syndrome in fowl

Hydropericardium syndrome in caused by adenovirus and characterized by watery straw colored fluid in pericardial sac, hepatitis and atrophy of lymphoid organs.

  • Disease occurs in growers after immunosuppression or stress with 5-10% mortality.
  • Spreads through both vertical and horizontal transmission. In breeding stocks, virus may remain in latent phase.
  • Bird sheds virus when there is immunosuppression or stress. Virus multiplies in intestine.
  • Through circulation reaches in various organs including pericardium.
  • Characteristic symptoms are enlargement of abdomen, anemia and sudden mortality.
