Hydropericardium syndrome in caused by adenovirus and characterized by watery straw colored fluid in pericardial sac, hepatitis and atrophy of lymphoid organs.
- Disease occurs in growers after immunosuppression or stress with 5-10% mortality.
- Spreads through both vertical and horizontal transmission. In breeding stocks, virus may remain in latent phase.
- Bird sheds virus when there is immunosuppression or stress. Virus multiplies in intestine.
- Through circulation reaches in various organs including pericardium.
- Characteristic symptoms are enlargement of abdomen, anemia and sudden mortality.
