Viral nephritis in poultry

Viral nephritis is caused by an enterovirus characterized by nephropathy deposition of urates, lymphofollicular reaction and poor growth in broilers particularly at the age of 1-4 weeks.

  • It is also known as Baby chick nephropathy. Ingestion of contaminated materials and eggs.
  • Virus is detected in faeces within 2 days. Maximum shedding occurs at 4-5 days.
  • Virus is widely distributed with maximum titers in kidneys and jejunum.
  • Lesions develop only in kidneys of young chickens.
  • Characteristic symptoms are stunted growth of birds, soiling of cloaca with semisolid cheesy material, urates and early chick mortality.
