Sarcosporidiosis is a protozoan parasitic disease of animals caused by several species of sarcocystis and characterized by presence of cysts in skeletal and cardiac muscles without much inflammatory reaction.
- On ingestion the sarcocystis enter through blood vessel by damaging the endothelial cells of arterioles and capillaries.
- Haemorrhage and anaemia.
- Fever occurs during parasitemia.
- Parasites lodge in muscles.
- Characteristic symptoms are fever, emaciation, anaemia, ‘Rat tail’ appearance, muscle twitching, loss of hair in neck, rump and abortion.
