Rotaviral diarrhoea occurs in young birds caused by rota virus and characterized by dehydration, enteritis and poor growth of the birds. Direct or indirect contact.
- Rotavirus infection is mainly confined to intestinal tract.
- Virus multiplies in the mature villus epithelial cells of small intestine.
- Epithelial cells are destroyed resulting in villus atrophy and crypt hypertrophy.
- Replacement of mature cells by immature cells.
- Maldigestion, malabsorption and diarrhoea occurs.
- Characteristic symptoms are diarrhoea in chicks at 1-2 weeks of age, dehydration, mortality in 5-10% birds and reduced growth.
