Rotaviral diarrhoea

Rotaviral diarrhoea occurs in young birds caused by rota virus and characterized by dehydration, enteritis and poor growth of the birds. Direct or indirect contact.

  • Rotavirus infection is mainly confined to intestinal tract.
  • Virus multiplies in the mature villus epithelial cells of small intestine.
  • Epithelial cells are destroyed resulting in villus atrophy and crypt hypertrophy.
  • Replacement of mature cells by immature cells.
  • Maldigestion, malabsorption and diarrhoea occurs.
  • Characteristic symptoms are diarrhoea in chicks at 1-2 weeks of age, dehydration, mortality in 5-10% birds and reduced growth.
