Ocular Ultrasonography

Any sound above audible range (20-20000 hz) is Ultra sound (2-20 mhz).

  • Ultrasonography is a diagnostic technique that involves directing high frequency sound waves at tissues in the body to generate images of anatomical structures.
  • Anechoic area are regions without internal echoes (black) Cysts, or fluid filled regions like blood, urine etc.
  • Hypoechoic-(grey) low signal reflection area are called hypoechoic (soft tissue).
  • Hyperechogenic or hyperechoic (bright)- there are many internal echoes.
  • Eye is occluded by a dense cataract, Blood in the eye, Suspect foreign body, Mass, or eye protrusion requires to conduct occular ultrasonography.
  • In any instances, the US exam can give much information about retina detachments.
