Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT)

Infectious laryngotracheitis is a viral disease of adult birds caused by herpes virus and characterized by gasping, blood tinged nasal discharge, haemorrhage in trachea and deposition of cheesy exudates in larynx and trachea.

  • Ingestion and inhalation are main source of transmission. Virus replicates in upper respiratory tract without viraemia.
  • After 4-7 days virus goes to trigeminal ganglion and remains in latency.
  • After long period activation of latent virus may occur.
  • Characteristic symptoms are watery fluid from eyes, dyspnoea, sneezing, coughing, rales and gasping.
