Infectious bursal disease is an immunosuppressive disease of birds caused by birna virus and characterized by lesions in bursa of fabricious, lack of B-lymphocytes, deposition of urates in kidneys and ureter and haemorrhagic myositis.
- Morbidity rate is as high as 100% and mortality is upto 80%.
- Transmitted through feed, water and droppings of the infected birds.
- Most common route of infection is oral route.
- Conjunctival and respiratory routes are also important. Virus infects macrophages and lymphoid cells.
- Virus first reaches the liver then in the blood stream. Virus causes destruction B-cells and their precursors.
- Bursal depletion causes immunosuppression.
- Characteristic symptoms are vary due to immunosuppression, trembling of body, picking of vent, watery diarrhoea and prostration.
