How did you differentiate two equine diseases i. e. Strangle and Glander?

Differences between Strangle and Glander

Both disease occurs in equines but here are some differentiate points between them;

  • Strangle
    • Acute in nature
    • Lung lesions are not tubercle like
    • Nasal mucosa show inflammatory changes only
    • No ulcer or nodule are formed on skin
    • Pus material show presence of gram +ve streptococci equi
  • Glander
    • Chronic in nature
    • Lung lesions are tubercle like
    • Nodule, ulcer or ‘stellete’ found on nasal mucosa
    • Ulcerative nodule are formed on skin
    • Pus material show presence of gram -ve pleomorphic rods i.e. Burkholderia mallei
