Fascioliosis: liver fluke disease

Fascioliosis is a trematode parasitic disease of animals caused by Fasciola species and characterized by hepatitis, cholecystitis and icterus.

  • Ova of the parasite in faeces germinate and form miracidium.
  • Miracidium penetrates the body of snails and after several stages, it becomes cercariae.
  • Which is attached to plants in water source.
  • This form is called as metacercariae.
  • Which are ingested by the animals.
  • Reaches in intestine and penetrate the intestine and migrate to liver to eventually develop in bile ducts and gall bladder.
