Different types of calculi and their occurrence

Calculi are of different types, structures and colours.

Calculi or urolith occurs in both sexes but most commonly incidences are in males.

Common site of occurence of calculi in ruminants is sigmoid flexure and in small animals it is urethral process besides the urinary bladder.

Different types of calculi and their occurrence

  • Uric acid calculi
    • Found in Acidic urine and common in Dalmatian dogs
    • Structure: Small, hard and formed in concentric rings
    • Colour: Brown
  • Oxalate calculi
    • Found in Acidic urine
    • Structure: Rough and spiny not well defined
    • Colour: Brown
  • Phosphate calculi
    • Found in Alkaline urine
    • Structure: Chalky and breakable
    • Colour: White
  • Xanthine calculi
    • Found in Acidic urine
    • Structure: Laminated and breakable
    • Colour: Brownish red
  • Cysteine calculi
    • Found in Acidic urine and common in cat
    • Structure: Small and irregular
    • Colour: Yellow and turns into green on exposing to air
